COACHES EDUCATION PROGRAMS
To be a coach demands qualities beyond the knowledge of specific games or events. For 60 years, the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation has built its program on a foundation of sportsmanship, safety, and fun. The basis of good coaching is a solid grounding in fundamentals. The Coaches Education Program was developed so that coaches at every level of experience can improve their skills in working with young athletes.

The LA84Foundation will offer three great cross country coaching clinics this summer in Southern California featuring some of the finest college and high school coaches in the nation.
All three clinics are offered free to coaches of all levels and any other interested adults who would like to attend. Each person who attends will also receive a free copy of the LA84 Cross Country Coaching Manual—widely considered to be the finest coaching manual available specifically geared to the high school coach.
Each one of the three clinics will offer a full day of Advanced Level sessions, a full day of Beginning Level sessions, and additional special sessions focusing on injury prevention, treatment and health. Furthermore, all of the Advanced Sessions will be completely different at each clinic, and the full Beginning Level clinic will be offered at each clinic, so bring your entire staff to each clinic.

Basketball: For coaches of 8- to 15-year-olds, Saturday August 14 at Cal Poly Pomona, from 9:00 to 3:15.
Three outstanding coaches will lead sessions at the LA84 Foundation Youth Basketball Coaches Clinic.
This FREE clinic is for coaches working with boys and girls ages 8 to 15. The emphasis will be on offensive and defensive skill development.

Greg Kamansky
2010 NCAA Division 2 National Champion Cal-Poly Pomona Head Coach Greg Kamansky earned All-American honors as a player at UC San Diego and finished his career as the school's second all-time leading scorer. As an assistant coach, he held positions at UC San Diego and Fresno Pacific, and has enjoyed tremendous success at Cal-Poly Pomona. In his ten seasons as Head Coach, he has led the Broncos to six NCAA Tournament berths, three Elite Eight appearances (one of only two schools to have done so in the last seven years), three West Region titles, two CCAA league titles, coached two All-Americans, been honored Coach of the year multiple times, and led his team to a National Championship Runner-up position before winning the National Championship the following season. Kamansky earned an MBA from San Diego State in 1993.
George Selleck
As a player, George Selleck earned honors as CIF high school basketball player of the year at Compton High School, after which he went on to earn All-American honors at Stanford University and was subsequently inducted into the Stanford University Hall of Fame. As a coach, he coached collegiately at Stanford and as a high school coach was honored as Los Angeles Times Coach of the Year twice. Among his many honors, Selleck has received the California State Athletic Director's Distinguished Service Award and was named by the Institute for International Sport (University of Rhode Island) as one of the 100 most influential sports educators. As an author, he has had numerous books published on coaching education and sports parenting. Among his academic accomplishments, Selleck earned a Masters degree in Educational Psychology from Stanford University and a Ph.D in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern California.
Steve Spencer
As a player, Steve Spencer earned numerous honors at Sir Francis Drake High school, College of Marin, and Sonoma State University, including Team Captain, MVP, All-League honors, and Defensive Player of the Year. As a coach, he has helped lead a variety of teams from all levels to elite status, including D3 Cal Lutheran to a #1 National ranking in 1993, professional basketball in Australia with the Adelaide 36ers, and as an assistant coach of the UCLA Bruins for five seasons, helped to lead the Bruins to three "Sweet 16" appearances and a Pac-10 championship team that reached the "Elite 8" in the NCAA Tournament. As Head Coach of Orange Coast College, Spencer has led the Pirates to multiple playoff appearances. Spencer is also a highly accomplished camp director and has shared his expertise as the lead clinician at the Lavin, Dunlap, Shot Doctor, and Magic Johnson Camps. Spencer earned his Masters degree in Counseling and Guidance and has published numerous articles on coaching.
The LA84 Foundation trained coaches to understand that participants' needs come "first" and winning is "second."
The LA84 Foundation coaching philosophy is built upon, FUN, FITNESS, and teaching FUNDAMENTALS.
Having expertise in the sport does not make one a "qualified" coach. It is more important to have expertise as a "coach."
