March is National Nutrition Month!
| Only 27% of American adults meet recommendations for eating enough vegetables and only 1/3 of us get the recommended amount of fruit (State Indicator Report on Fruits and Vegetables, 2009). Evidence suggests that a diet of nutritious foods and a routine of increased physical activity could help reduce the incidence of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes—the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. Changing behaviors is one part of the solution; the other is making healthy food options more readily available, easily accessible, and affordable. The CDC Healthy Places Web site’s Healthy Food Environment page has strategies for creating and maintaining a healthy food environment; tools for assessing areas with limited healthy and fresh food access and examining community food systems; and other resources to help ensure a healthy food environment in your community. |
