SCMAF presented this year's Turf and Ball Field Management Workshop
through a partnership between the City of
In attendance were over 30 parks and recreation professionals
representing agencies across southern
attendees were given a tour of the Rose Bowl facility by Maintenance Superintendent Will Schnell. Will is a former grounds keeper for the Cleveland Browns and the Los Angeles Dodgers and has worked at the Rose Bowl for the past ten years. Will provided the attendees with a special inside look at the Rose Bowl’s maintenance program and what they do to maintain their field. He brought everyone down to the playing field and toured the UCLA Bruins’ locker room.
Afterwards, SCMAF President Carlos Espinosa thanked Will for his time and spoke briefly of the positive working relationship between the City of Cerritos Parks and Recreation Divisions and the field maintenance department that has been successfully implemented. This communication between the departments has made it easier for event planning and scheduling and encouraged those in attendance to try to foster such a dialogue as well.
Next the attendees headed over to Brookside Park across the street from The Rose Bowl for some demonstrations on field painting and baseball/softball preparation. The field painting demonstration was present by Tim Pellegrino from The Perfect Field™. Tim’s demonstration was based on a two man job painting a soccer field. With Tim’s method, a soccer field could be finished in less than 30 minutes. Tim also presented many painting tips and access to resources that will make field painting easier.
Patrick May from Major League Softball followed Tim on baseball/softball preparation. Patrick took questions from the attendees on issues their baseball/softball fields were experiencing and the best practices they could carry out to correct them.
Overall, the Turf and Ball Field Management was a tremendous success,
in large part due to the City of
would also like to thank the event's sponsors Major League Softball and The Perfect Field™.
