The SCMAF University Member Education Program hosted a free School of Adult Sports Management for over 50 attendees. The workshop was held at Wilson Park Sports Complex in Torrance.
SCMAF’s goals for attendees were to teach the fundamentals of adult sports programming and to help develop a adult sports philosophy. Richard Burnett, city of Torrance, Recreation Services Manager welcomed the attendees to the workshop and gave them a brief history of Torrance comittment to SCMAF. The featured speakers at this event were Davie B. Gillus (SCMAF, Program Coordinator), Dave Dill (City of Torrance, Recreation Supervisor), Luis Salcedo (Cal South) and Maurice Baker (Los Angeles Clippers). Topics covered in the workshop included everything needed to establish a successful adult sports program from ways to offer a self sustaining program, partnering and contracting programs to facility inspection. The speakers touched on all phases of running a adult program from rules and advertising to recruiting and hiring officials.

The School of adult Sports Management also emphasized the importance of staff development. The workshop stressed that in order to run a proper program; staff in all phases must be as knowledgeable and prepared as possible. The workshop ended with a roundtable discussion to give attendees the opportunity to openly ask questions and share ideas with one another.
