On Sunday, June 3, at Warren High School in Downey, over 800 athletes competed in SCMAF’s annual Track and Field Championships. Hundreds of family members and friends cheered on from the stands as boys and girls between the ages of 7-15 competed in ten different track and field events. Over 30 different agencies throughout southern California participated in this meet.
After the Parade of Champions around the track, SCMAF President Tim Grierson (City of Carson) opened the meet with a few words of encouragement and thanks. The first event, the 1600M run started at 9:45 AM with the last event of the day, the 200M dash ending slightly after 3:00 PM. There were 102 events throughout the day with SCMAF passing out close to 500 medals and 400 ribbons to the winners.
Three meet records were broken during the course of the day, all of them in the Long Jump. Kendall Cahill from Orange County broke the Division 11 Long Jump record by 3 inches. Caroline Glessing from Orange County broke the Division 03 Long Jump also by 3 inches. And Edison Jones also from Orange County broke the Division 11 Long Jump by 1 inch! Congratulations to our new record holders!
A special thanks goes to all the volunteers for all their hard work in organizing this year’s meet. Also thanks to Warren High School for allowing us to host this event at this location for the past 12 years. The success of the Track and Field Championships could not have been achieved without the cooperation of all these individuals.
Lastly, thanks to all our competitors, coaches and family members. It was a great day of races and events and none of this would have been possible without the time and sacrifice all of these individuals made in order to participate in the meet. We hope you had a memorable experience and look forward to watching all of you compete next year. There may be a future Olympian for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games in our midst!
