Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. To prevent heart disease and increase awareness of its effects, SCMAF is proudly participating in American Heart Month by spreading the word about heart disease and how to prevent it. In the State of California, heart disease is the leading cause of death. Nearly one in three adults – over eight million Californians – are living with at least one of the most common forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD) which are heart disease, heart failure, stroke, or hypertension (high blood pressure).

You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. To lower your risk:

  • Watch your weight.
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
  • Get active and eat healthy.

It is never too late or too early to take care of your heart. For more information, visit the American Heart Association website: https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living
